Background of the study
Cultural context plays a crucial role in the translation of traditional narratives, particularly in languages as dynamic as Nigerian Pidgin. Traditional narratives are deeply embedded with cultural idioms, historical references, and social values that can be challenging to convey in translation. Nigerian Pidgin, widely used as a lingua franca, has been adopted as a medium for retelling these narratives to a broader, multi-ethnic audience (Okechukwu, 2023). Translators must navigate the delicate balance between maintaining cultural authenticity and ensuring comprehensibility for diverse audiences. This study investigates how cultural context influences the translation of traditional narratives into Nigerian Pidgin. It examines the strategies employed by translators to capture the nuances of the source material, including the use of localized expressions and context-specific adaptations (Ifeanyi, 2024). Furthermore, the research analyzes the impact of cultural context on reader interpretation and the preservation of cultural identity. Through case studies of translated texts, interviews with translators, and comparative analyses of narrative versions, the study seeks to uncover best practices that uphold both linguistic accuracy and cultural integrity (Okechukwu, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Despite its potential, the translation of traditional narratives into Nigerian Pidgin often suffers from a failure to adequately incorporate cultural context. Translators sometimes opt for literal translations that strip away essential cultural references, leading to a loss of meaning and reduced cultural resonance (Okechukwu, 2023). Additionally, the diverse linguistic landscape and rapid evolution of Nigerian Pidgin pose challenges in maintaining consistency across translations (Ifeanyi, 2024). These issues contribute to varying levels of quality in translated narratives and hinder the preservation of cultural heritage. This study aims to identify these challenges and propose strategies to enhance the cultural fidelity of translations.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it explores the interplay between cultural context and translation in preserving traditional narratives through Nigerian Pidgin. The insights will benefit translators, cultural scholars, and educators by providing strategies to maintain cultural richness and ensure accurate communication of traditional values (Okechukwu, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2024).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the effect of cultural context on Nigerian Pidgin translation of traditional narratives. It does not extend to other genres or languages.
